The EU reiterated that it will not recognise the result of the elections in Venezuela until it is verified

Brussels.-The international community continues to demand that the National Electoral Council publish the voting records certifying the published data, especially after opposition leader María Corina Machado released the certificates of more than 70% of the tables throughout the country that declared Edmundo González Urrutia the winner.

After two days of protests against electoral fraud, dictator Nicolás Maduro ordered a military and police patrol throughout the country starting this Wednesday. At least 13 civilians were killed in the wave of repression launched by the regime against those demanding respect for the will expressed at the polls on Sunday.

Venezuela’s armed forces, the main supporter of the Chavista regime, have expressed their “absolute loyalty and unconditional support” for Maduro, Venezuelan Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino López said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the international community continues to demand that the National Electoral Council publish the voting records certifying the published data, especially after opposition leader María Corina Machado released the certificates of more than 70% of the tables throughout the country that declared Edmundo González Urrutia the winner.

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, said on Wednesday in Hanoi that the EU cannot recognise the results of the elections in Venezuela until there is a complete and “independently verified” count.

“The National Electoral Council (CNE) has only presented the result corresponding to 80% of the votes counted, and without providing any source or system that allows for its verification,” said Borrell, who is visiting Vietnam. “With this partial, unverifiable result, the CNE has proceeded to declare the victory of Nicolás Maduro. In a democracy, the results must be complete and able to be independently verified in order to be recognized,” he added during a press conference in the Vietnamese capital.

Borrell called on Venezuelan authorities to guarantee “the integrity and transparency of the process by independently verifying the minutes of the polling stations” and stressed that the data provided by the opposition are “radically different” from those announced by the CNE.

“The European Union calls on the National Electoral Council of Venezuela to facilitate immediate access to the voting records of all polling stations. Until the authorities publish the records and they are verified, the announced results cannot be recognised,” it stressed.

The head of European diplomacy recalled that “the EU has always defended that the way out of this crisis is through elections and that remains the solution” and appealed for “the demonstrations and protests to be peaceful.”

“Security forces must ensure full respect for human rights, in particular the rights to protest and assembly,” he said.
