The European Union (EU) communicated through its official agency that postponed to mid-2025 the entry into force of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).
Initially, the authorities of the Old Continent had announced that the implementation of the ETIAS would come into force during the second half of 2024. However, they decided to postpone its premiere for reasons that are currently unknown.

In this way, starting in mid-2025, some 1.4 billion of people from more than 60 countries -among which is Argentina– visa exempt will have to present a travel authorization to enter most European nations.
ETIAS: how the system will work to enter Europe
From the EU they clarify that the virtual scheme it is not equivalent to a visa nor will it require going to a consulate or taking biometric data from citizens who intend to enter Europa.
“Nor will it replace the entry requirements that remain in force within each country. In the vast majority of cases authorization will be automatic and will arrive by email in a few minutes,” they detail.
The system will govern to visit the following 30 nations: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden and Switzerland.
The authorization of ETIAS will cost 7 euros or 7,609 pesos Argentines, at the current parallel exchange rate. The procedure will be free for those under 18 and over 70 years old.
At the same time, the enable can be used for multiple inputs with a maximum duration of 90 days and will be valid for three years or until the applicant’s passport expires.
Regarding the implementation of the procedure, it will be divided into three phases: transitional, grace and mandatory. As the gears are oiled, the last instance will be fixed.

Alert for scams with the ETIAS
The announcement of the launch of ETIAS caused the proliferation of at least 56 unofficial pages that do not have the endorsement of the European authority to operate. In fact, an option will be offered for travelers to report irregularities.
“While some of these websites are run by genuine commercial intermediaries, others may be run by people with dubious intentions“, they warned from the EU agency.
In this sense, they highlighted that unofficial portals can hide scams that “They will try to benefit financially of ETIAS applicants and may misuse applicants’ personal data and credit cards.
