The EU intends to continue gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine

Several European countries are working to continue Russian gas supplies via Ukraine to the EU after the corresponding contract between Kiev and Moscow expires at the end of 2024. This was reported on Wednesday, July 3, by the German economic newspaper Handelsblatt.

In particular, the German Ministry of Economy and the European Commission (EC) told the publication that the German government and Brussels are negotiating with EU member states that receive transit gas. At the same time, the European Union is considering the possibility of concluding a contract with Gazprom for gas transit through Ukraine, Handelsblatt writes, citing a representative of the European Commission.

Despite the war with Ukraine, Russia continues to supply gas through its territory to EU countries such as Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

The option of transiting Azerbaijani gas through Ukraine is being considered

In mid-June, Bloomberg also reported, citing informed sources, that EU officials were negotiating to continue gas supplies through the key Russia-Ukraine pipeline into 2025. One option under discussion, according to the agency, is for European companies to buy gas from Azerbaijan and pump it into Russian pipelines running to Europe.

The head of the Ukrainian company Naftogaz, Oleksiy Chernyshov, previously stated that he would do everything to find a solution in which the Ukrainian gas transportation system would continue to operate, since “it is a large asset and a buyer is needed for it.”

At the same time, in March, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko claimed that Kyiv does not intend to conclude any additional agreements or extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. This contract expires on December 31, 2024.
