“The EU back to the beginnings of the Enlightenment” – 2024-05-01 20:13:26

The coordinator of the Development and Investment Sector of the “Democrates” party, Apostolos Vlachos, is sending a message through “Peloponnisos”, who is entering the battle of the upcoming elections, as a candidate for the European Parliament.

– Why did you decide to go down with the “Democrats”?

Europe is our present and our future. In previous years, under the responsibility of the political system, the attitude of the citizens towards the EU has ranged from relaxed to disparaging. Today we face enormous challenges.

Coming from the field of SMEs, I believe that politics should be experiential. To connect with experiences and everyday life. I want to give special importance to highlighting the role of SMEs and the importance of their flexibility in dealing with economic crises.

– What is the party’s goal in the June 9 ballot?

Primary, is the achievement of 3%, with the ultimate goal of occupying the 6th place in the European elections and our entry into the European Parliament. However, beyond June 9, the “Democrats” aim to be a reliable political body in the centrist space, which has been abandoned by the opposition parties, allowing its guardianship to K. Mitsotakis.

– What are the main points of your program and your proposals?

From the first moment the “Democrats” were founded, it was emphasized that the way of life defines our identity, the Greek language is the connecting link of our historical continuity and the Greek natural beauty is our great comparative advantage. The “Democrats” were created with a vision of preserving every inch of land, looking forward to a patriotism of measure, simplicity, protection and renewal of our tradition, away from populist nationalisms.

We are a party that emphasizes funding for Education and Health. We are a party with the central goal of eradicating poverty, utilizing Greece’s geographical position, the wealth of its land, and Renewable Energy Sources. We are a party oriented towards the EU and the Euro-Atlantic institutions, without ignoring the need to strengthen the Greek Armed Forces. We are a party that wants a durable state, free from the shackles of bureaucracy, an expression of social justice with a reliable system for everyone.

– Do you see a “right” shift in the European political map? And if so, where is this due to?

This right turn of European societies is now very intense. The increase in the cost of living, as a result of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, I believe has played a decisive role, together with the migration flows.

Societies have accumulated anger. They do not trust parties that move along the traditional political spectrum. Citizens feel that leaders are disconnected from timeless values such as equality and justice, so they are desperate for someone to voice them. At the same time, far-right parties have begun rounding up their rhetoric in order to lure centrist voters, while far-right parties have begun adopting far-right slogans to woo ultra-conservative voters. One way or another, the far right has now become very mainstream. And this is terribly dangerous.

– What are the most serious issues that will concern Europe in the coming years?

A very serious issue is its defensive armor. Without defense we are disreputable. The war conflicts in the wider neighborhood of our continent have already put the strengthening of the European defense industry on the table. Another major factor is demographics. The effects of climate change will also be a permanent source of concern. The EU should speed up the implementation of its climate commitments. The competitiveness of Europe will also be a very crucial issue.
