The EU announced increased readiness for nuclear threats

The European Commission announced on Wednesday the creation of strategic reserves in the event of the implementation of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. The use of reserves is prescribed to the civil protection structures of the European Union.

Commenting on this decision of the European Commission, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic said that such measures are taken “in the face of potential threats” and consist of creating reserves for decontamination and a stock of equipment to work in emergencies of chemical, biological or nuclear origin .

The communiqué of the European Commission on the issue of creating reserves specifies that 540.5 million euros have been allocated for these purposes. The reserve will consist of equipment and facilities for the treatment of citizens exposed to chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear effects, as well as decontamination equipment to provide response teams.

In addition, the European Commission reported on the first organizational measures carried out as part of work with reserves: potassium iodide tablets were purchased, used to protect once morest radiation exposure, and almost 3 million of these tablets have already been delivered to Ukraine “through the EU civil protection mechanism with the help of France and Spain “.
