The Ethiopian Prime Minister, through the BRICS Business Forum: We have liberalized basic economic sectors to attract investors

The Ethiopian Prime Minister’s statements came in a speech via video technology to participants in the plenary session of the BRICS Business Forum held today in Moscow.

The following are the most prominent statements:

  • The BRICS countries constitute half of the world’s population and more than a third of the global economy.
  • The BRICS countries have great potential to participate in sustainable development, and to achieve this potential we must work actively so that global management tools work with the countries that constitute the market economy.
  • The new financial system must conform to the demands of BRICS members and other developing countries.
  • Ethiopia is an attractive country for investment, and we have carried out effective reforms in the economy, including liberalizing basic sectors, including communications and the financial sector.
  • We urge the exploitation of opportunities that Ethiopia can offer in the field of mining, energy and agriculture.
  • We also liberalized the use of currencies, which helps attract foreign investments. We did this so that Ethiopia could become a competitive country in global markets.
  • Strategies must be adopted to mitigate the challenges facing the global economy.

The forum comes about a week before the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, where Russia chairs the group this year.

BRICS is an international group that was established in 2006, and Russia has assumed its presidency since the beginning of this year, 2024.

In addition to Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, Egypt, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Ethiopia have joined BRICS since the beginning of 2024.
