The escaped lemur is actually fine – but the head zookeeper fears one thing

– They are the ones who decide in the facility – and the females have probably hunted around too much with him, explains head zookeeper Louise Møller Boye, Aalborg Zoo.

On Monday morning, she says that the lemur is actually currently located in one of the outer areas of the zoo.

25 meter

– But it changes all the time where he is – a lemur can jump up to 25 metres, so it can go fast, it says.

The lemur doesn’t really have a natural enemy, so it’s not like the alarm bells are going off and on.

– He is not in distress and jumps around cheerfully – there are leaves and apples on the trees in several places in the neighborhood, and it is not that cold yet either, explains the head zookeeper.

However, this does not mean that you do not want the lemur back as soon as possible.

– It is our breeding male that is gone. But now it’s the autumn holidays, and we may well get nervous that he could be locked up in a shed or a playhouse if people are going on holiday. That’s why we also want him back quickly, says Louise Møller Boye.

But how could he escape from the new Madagascar facility, which was commissioned in the summer of 2023?

– In fact, it is still completely unclear. It is built so that the lemurs can jump 25 metres, so we don’t quite know how it happened, says the zookeeper.

Butt-swinging

In the attempt to catch the small crab, both monkey food is used – the species is a semi-monkey – and nets, if necessary.

The lemur is a bit of an audience favorite in the zoo – and its popularity has probably been helped along by the animated film Madagascar’s butt-swinging King Julien.

– It’s one of our hit animals, what we call a “nooooh animal”, which people think is cute. This is also why people have to be careful, says Louise Møller Boye, who has warned in a Facebook post not to approach it, even if it is not dangerous as such.

It may well feel a little pressured at the moment.

Wild animal on the run from the Zoo: He can and will bite

In the past, both a black panther, chimpanzees on several occasions and peacocks have escaped from the garden.

– We trust that our neighbors will contact us if it stays for a long time in a tree or on the roof of a playhouse. We very much hope to get hold of it today (Monday, ed.), when we are also more at work than at the weekend, Louise Møller Boye.
