In Sudan, bloody fighting has forced more than 700,000 people to flee inside the country since mid-April, the UN said on Tuesday. “This is more than double the number of internally displaced people” counted last Tuesday, which stood at 340,000 people, explained Paul Dillon, spokesperson for the UN agency for migration (IOM). during the regular UN briefing in Geneva.

Even before the start of the fighting, 3.7 million people were registered as internally displaced in Sudan, he recalled. Nearly 150,000 people have also fled the country elsewhere in the region since the fighting began, according to figures dated Monday and compiled by the High Commissioner for Refugees.

“Many internally displaced people are taking refuge with relatives, while others are congregating in schools, mosques and public buildings,” explained Paul Dillon. He underlined “the extreme generosity of the Sudanese people and their communities, who opened their doors to the displaced people arriving in their areas”.

But he also pointed out that these host communities themselves, “in many cases, are already suffering the effects of more than three weeks of fighting”.

More than 750 dead and 5,000 injured

Fighting continues, in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan, between the camps of the two rival generals, while negotiations on a truce between their representatives are stalled in Saudi Arabia.

The clashes between the army of Abdel Fattah al-Burhane and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces of Mohamed Hamdane Daglo have already left more than 750 dead in the country, according to the NGO Acled, and the Sudanese authorities have counted 5,000 wounded.
