The EPP asks Borrell to recognize Edmundo González as elected president of Venezuela

The European Parliamentary Group of the European People’s Party urged the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, to take the step of recognizing the opposition leader Edmundo González as the legitimate elected president of Venezuela, according to a letter to which EFE had access. Access this Thursday.

The letter signed by 36 popular MEPs, including the heads of the group’s national delegations, celebrates that Borrell has declared that “Maduro did not win the elections and it was the leader of the opposition who won them” and points out that the “logical step” to Next would be the recognition of González.

“After being so unequivocal about who won and lost the elections, we urge you to take the logical and necessary step of expressly recognizing Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate elected president of Venezuela, in line with the European Parliament resolution on the situation in Venezuela “says the letter.

With this resolution, the European Parliament went – symbolically – beyond the Council of the European Union, whose foreign ministers are responsible for community foreign policy and who at the end of last August decided not to recognize Maduro as president but neither do it with the opposition leader.

“If we know who lost and recognize who won, we must give the winner the title that is due to him: president-elect,” says the letter, which urges us to do “whatever is necessary” so that the will of Venezuelan voters is respected. as proven by the electoral records presented and independently verified.”

The popular ones add that recognizing who Venezuelans have voted for as president “should be part” of the support, solidarity and respect that Europe owes to the country.

“To end the long-standing humanitarian and socio-economic crisis perpetrated by the Maduro regime, the EU and the international community must do everything possible to ensure a peaceful transition so that the legitimate and democratically elected president can take office on January 10, 2025. .
