The delegation will be led by Nathalie Loiseau, the representative of France in the EP, a member of the “Renew Europe” group, who is also the chairperson of the Security and Defense Subcommittee. She will be accompanied by the Chairman of the EP Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister (European People’s Party, Germany).
In addition to them, the delegation will also include R. Juknevičienė (European People’s Party, Lithuania), Gheorghe-Vladas Nistor (European People’s Party, Romania), Attila Ara-Kovács (Advanced Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Hungary) and Carina Ohlsson (Socialist and Democratic Party advanced alliance, Sweden).
The EP delegation is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Israeli and Palestinian authorities, Israeli families whose loved ones were abducted by Hamas, Palestinian civil society and international partners.
MEPs will reportedly try to assess the current and future role of the European Union (EU) in the region. Two missions in particular will be given a lot of attention: the EU Police Mission in the Palestinian Territories (EUPOL COPPS) and the EU Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point (EU BAM Rafah).
EUPOL COPPS was initiated to assist the Palestinian Authority in building its institutions for a future Palestinian state, focusing on security and justice sector reforms.
EUBAM Rafah civilian mission whose role is to support the Palestinian Authority’s border agencies, in particular to train and advise personnel at border and crossing points, towards a modern, sustainable border management system built on EU and international standards. This mission also supports projects on trade facilitation and the introduction of biometric passports.
