BM Polaschek: Strengthening the European Open Science Cloud for the benefit of researchers in Austria and throughout Europe

Vienna (OTS) On October 19th, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, together with the University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology with the participation of the European Commission and other partners, organized the event “The EOSC Lustrum – five years of EOSC developments”. EOSC stands for European Open Science Cloud and was developed as a concept by the European Commission. At the event on Wednesday under the motto “5 years of EOSC developments”, perspectives, opportunities and challenges for data in science and research in Europe were discussed with international guests. Topic-specific sessions were used to develop and exchange new ideas and perspectives.

“It fills me with pride and joy that, following five years of intensive work, we are continuing to strengthen the European Open Science Cloud for the benefit of researchers in Austria and Europe. “Essential to our efforts in the EOSC process is to bring together existing scientific data systems to provide science and technology professionals with unprecedented access to the storage, management, analysis and reuse of research data and services,” emphasizes Martin Polaschek, Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research.

EOSC aims to create an integrated transnational research infrastructure that supports and promotes open science and innovation in Europe and beyond. By unifying existing scientific data systems, science and technology professionals will gain unprecedented access to the storage, management, analysis and reuse of research data and services, previously limited to scientific disciplines or geographical boundaries. The University of Vienna played an important role in the development of EOSC and hosted the adoption of the Vienna Declaration on the European Open Science Cloud in 2018.

“In 2018, the Vienna Declaration on the European Open Science Cloud was adopted in the reading room of the University Library of Vienna. We are pleased that, following five years of intensive work, stakeholders from all over Europe are once once more visiting the Vienna University Library to strengthen EOSC and once once more issue a forward-looking joint statement,” said library director Maria Seissl during the event.

After the launch of the EOSC, with the support of the BMBWF, the Austrian EOSC Initiative was able to set up a joint virtual secretariat called EOSC Support Office Austria.

Vice Rector of the University of Vienna Roland Maier emphasizes: “Since the EOSC launch, intensive work has been done to offer researchers in Europe efficient access to an open, cross-disciplinary infrastructure for their research data. The aim is to improve the quality, traceability and reuse of research data and results. The University of Vienna is committed to this goal and the associated open research data culture.”
