The Environment Committee of the Seimas again proposes to prevent the use of night sights in hunting

Five members of the committee voted on Wednesday to approve Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė’s proposal to ban the use of night sights, hunting bows and dogs of fighting and aggressive breeds in hunting.

“There is a proposal to delete what the Seimas wrote about night clubs fighters of use and return the original project as it was conceived, and also clearly write in the law that it is prohibited to use hunting bows and dogs of fighting and aggressive breeds”, the head of the Government said during the committee meeting.

In June, the Seimas approved the amendment to the Hunting Law after the discussion, so that night sights and their accessories can be used for hunting wild boars and invasive animals.

According to I. Šimonytė, it would be impossible to determine whether night sights were not used to hunt other animals, if hunters can have them.

“Even as a not very big (hunting – BNS) expert, I can say that if the use of this equipment is allowed, and despite the fact that it is supposedly narrowed down in the law, it is specifically written what could be hunted using that equipment, but if the hunter has such equipment and hunted something that cannot be hunted with a night scope or destroyerin that case, to prove that it was or was not used by conservationists, I have no idea what methods would be needed,” said the Prime Minister.

According to her, the argument that hunters need night sights for border defense is also unconvincing.

“After all, people don’t learn to defend their country by shooting wild boars, there are shooting ranges and other means for that,” said the Prime Minister.

Social Democrat member of the Seimas Linas Jonauskas and a group of colleagues submitted amendments to the Law on Hunting to the Seimas last year in order to transfer the list of tools, means and methods prohibited for use in hunting from the rules to the law. It also has night sights. However, during the consideration of the project in the Seimas, it was changed, providing for the possibility of allowing the use of night vision devices in hunting in certain cases.
