The arrival of Matías Walker (exDC) to the Senate table, following the agreement that was to grant the head of the PPD Pedro Araya was not respected, leaving RN José García in his place; For many, it was the turning point or the official debut of Democrats, his nascent party, as a member of the Chilean right.
The group, made up of former concertationist militants, even already has a presidential letter – Senator Ximena Rincón -, which they intend to compete in primaries alongside Chile Vamos, which so far has Evelyn Matthei as its main option.
At the local level, the regional president of Democrats, Alberto Jarpa, stressed that “we are in the political center, we are in the independent center, and today we can reach agreements with the right on legislative matters or on issues that are of interest. Here Democrats cannot be identified as a right-wing party, we are a center party, and we are going to be there, generating this political offer for many people who in some way electorally seek a differentiated political sector,” he stated.
He added that “we are clearly giving the possibility to the entire electorate to become part of ideas that aim to seek social well-being where both the State and the market are combined. Here it is not that we want more State, we want a better market; or we want more market, we want a better market. So with that conception we identify this political center as the opportunity or possibility that the Chilean electoral population has to opt for democratic candidates,” he expressed.
Regarding Ximena Rincón, he stated that “yes she can be a presidential option, we are in any case willing to be able to participate in a primary election with the candidates from this sector (center), and why not say it, with the right-wing candidates who “They are with the presidential search, and the electorate will have to define where they lean, respecting democracy as a central axis,” he said.
From Amarillos, the other community born during the Constituent processes, its regional president, Reinaldo Figueroa, stated that “the arrival of Democrats to the Senate table, through Matías Walker, indicates a need for a change of political directions at the highest levels.” instances of the country. This is how, for my part, I can explain the current composition of the Upper House and how it was generated. These are forces and senators that value the function of that body, unlike other political forces whose greatest aspiration until very recently was its elimination. From the point of view of how the Democratic Party comes to occupy a vice presidency there, I can say that it is a coincidence of political objectives in the administration of the Senate. I don’t know if that’s enough or not to talk regarding an alliance, which I consider something much bigger. As a representative of a centrist force, such as Amarillos for Chile, I can say that I would like to see more political-electoral coincidences that might generate future political projects together with Chile Vamos, such as a governance alliance, but on our part “Our aspiration is to remain in the political center, not to form an alliance with Chile Vamos,” he stated.
According to Figueroa, “the nature of the existence of center parties is precisely to remain in their rightful place to more faithfully represent millions of voters who are neither right nor left, and who aspire to greater moderation.” in political decisions, like a change of government,” he said.
The look of Chile Vamos
In Chile Vamos, the regional president of the UDI, Isabel Troncoso, believes that it is good news that the opposition is expanding towards the center.
“The fact that there has been poor government management has caused a new opposition majority to form. Now, if the arrival of Matías Walker to the Senate helps the purpose of the right, that the country is safe, that we grow once more, that we generate employment once more, it does not complicate things for us. Quite the opposite, if we are thinking the same and for the good of Chile, welcome. Now, our electoral alliances are with Chile Vamos, and we aspire to integrate Republicans with pacts by omission. What we are clear regarding from the UDI is that unity is the only way to defeat the left and this bad government,” he expressed.
As for Evelyn Matthei going to primaries, “although I think it is too early to talk regarding it, no possibility has been ruled out. We are open, and in fact, it has been declared that any person who aspires to become president must be willing to compete with people who agree on a common project for the country. In reality, no scenario is ruled out, and there should be broad primaries, something that has not yet been defined, but I hope that for the good of our country, it will lead to a common candidate,” she pointed out.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Mellado, regional president of Evópoli, maintained that “in good politics, signs and gestures of good will are very well received, this in accordance with the gesture of our senator Luciano Cruz-Coke, who gave up the quota that corresponded to him by agreement to integrate the vice presidency. The criticism of the ruling party for the arrival of Matías Walker to the Senate table is unfair, given that Senator Walker maintains an impeccable career. In reference to the agreements, these must be respected in a comprehensive manner, this in relation to the delays in the definition of the committee candidate and the definition of the quota on the Finance Commission, which included Democrats, a situation that generated a new proposal for the Senate table,” he stated.
Regarding the possibility that Ximena Rincón will go to a primary with Evelyn Matthei, she believes that “it is premature to determine such a primary, in Evópoli and Chile Vamos we are focused on planning and strategies to address the municipal elections of 2024, crucial elections to face the presidential elections. . Starting in November 2024, we will be able to put names on the table and look for the best representative of the right, center-right and related alliances in the institutions,” she said.
Regarding the political domicile of Democrats, Mellado stated that “in my opinion, Democrats was born from the need to represent a center left that was not representing many Chileans in the care of democracy. Today, Democrats seek to advance the good of the country, focusing on understanding and agreements with our political path (right and center-right), but this does not make Democrats a right-wing or center-right political party.
Regarding Amarillos, Mellado maintained that “at Ñuble we are working together with them, the Ñuble Table is made up of the participation of the Amarillos leadership, always thinking regarding the good of the people, the region and the sustainable development that we require to move forward.” as it matches. It is crucial to generate agreements and alliances, which is why we have been working for quite some time at the Ñuble Table, in order to propose the best candidates in the 2024 municipal elections, leaving aside the partisan, and putting the well-being and development of the communities first. 21 communes in our region,” he expressed.
