The energy group Vattenfall and the steel and technology group Salzgitter AG …

According to Vattenfall, this corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 120,000 households. In return, the steel company will receive a connected capacity of 75 megawatts for 15 years.

“The electricity partnership with Salzgitter AG underlines our long-term strategy at Vattenfall to enable a fossil-free life not only for ourselves, but also for our suppliers, partners and customers,” explained Martijn Hagens, member of the Executive Board and Head of the Markets Division at Vattenfall. Salzgitter CEO Gunnar Groebler emphasized: “Green steel needs green energy: This agreement is therefore a next important step in securing our energy needs for low-CO2 production.”

Hagens said that fossil-free electricity from private supply contracts offers competitive costs and “the guarantee that the electricity purchased actually comes from renewable sources – including proof of the type and location of green electricity generation.” In general, an increase in electricity partnerships is expected. Vattenfall referred to an analysis by the German Energy Agency (Dena), according to which their volume in Germany could rise to 192 terawatt hours by 2030. That corresponds to a quarter of Germany’s total electricity demand.
