What makes the Enlightenment an object of history like no other, still incandescent enough to spark debate and controversy more than two centuries away? This is the question that Antoine Lilti confronts in his inaugural lecture at the Collège de France, where he has held the chair of History of the Enlightenment, 18th-21st centuries since 2022. The resulting text can be read as a rich and powerful essay on the legacy of the Enlightenment (to use the title of one of Antoine Lilti’s most important books), but also as an attractive “discourse on method” of the profession of historian today.
