The End of an Era After Queen Elizabeth II Dies

War Elizabeth II died. Departure Queen of England has forever marked the end of an era.

Thursday (8/9) local time, the Queen died at Balmoral Palace, Scotland, at the age of a century less than four years. Outside Buckingham Palace, Britons flocked, as reported by the BBC, Friday (9/9/2022).

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on April 21, 1926, in a house near Berkeley Square in central London.

She is the eldest daughter of Albert or the Duke of York – who is the second son of King George V – and his wife known as Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

During the war, Elizabeth’s father became king, his name was King George VI. Her father’s coronation as king gave Elizabeth a small glimpse into her future which led her to write that she rated her service to the country ‘very, very extraordinary’.

Against the backdrop of rising tensions in Europe, the new King – with his wife now known as Queen Elizabeth – is trying to restore public confidence in the monarchy.

In January 1952, 25-year-old Elizabeth, and Philip left the palace for an overseas tour. Despite the doctor’s orders, King George VI went to the airport to drop them off and that was the last time Elizabeth saw her father.

Elizabeth heard of the king’s death while living in a hunting lodge in Kenya and immediately returned to London to become the new queen. She became queen at the age of 27.

“I had nothing, my father died too soon, so it was something very sudden and I had to do the best I could,” Elizabeth said years later. She was crowned Queen of England in June 1953.

The beginning of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign was filled by the Suez crisis situation. Many countries that were former British colonies gained independence, India is one of them. Subsequently, more and more former British colonies took down the Commonwealth Flag. The Suez Dispute of 1956 accelerated the situation. The then British Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, stepped down and put the Queen in the middle of a political crisis.

The era of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (who is both female) was a ‘confusing’ era for the public. Queen Elizabeth II reportedly found Thatcher’s confrontational stance and style ‘confusing’ including her opposition to sanctions over apartheid in South Africa.
