Windows 11 has many advantages, compared to previous versions of the operating system. But when it comes to the required features, Microsoft has been particularly demanding, prioritizing the quality and security of the OS. As a result, a very large number of machines currently running Windows 10 are not compatible with Windows 11.
However, Windows 10 already has a planned end of support date. We have known for a while that Microsoft will end official support for this operating system on October 14, 2025. And as we gradually approach this end of life for Windows 10, the Redmond firm is publishing new information at this subject.
In a blog post, Microsoft discusses the different solutions for users of Windows 10 machines. For PCs incompatible with Windows 11, Microsoft suggests purchasing a new computer, or using Windows 11 via the cloud. Otherwise, when Windows 10 reaches its official end of support, some will still be able to use this operating system, provided they pay for extended support.
Microsoft is doing it once more
“While we strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11, we understand that certain circumstances might prevent you from replacing Windows 10 devices before the EOS date (editor’s note, end of support). Therefore, Microsoft will offer extended security updates. Like the Windows 7 ESU program, your organization will be able to purchase an annual subscription to security updates. The annual commitment is renewable for three years”explains Microsoft on its website.
As a reminder, a similar offer allowed certain users to continue using Windows 7, following its official end of support. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 in January 2020. However, those who paid for extended support were able to continue using this older version until January 2023.
Microsoft is already preparing the sequel
In any case, it is also important to point out that today, Microsoft is already thinking regarding the sequel: Windows 12. Rumors regarding this next version of the OS are very numerous. And recently, sources even suggested that the company might launch Windows 12 in June. And normally, in this new version, Microsoft should focus even more on generative artificial intelligence.
- Microsoft is preparing the end of Windows 10, which is scheduled for October 14, 2025
- On this date, the company will stop supporting the operating system, except for those who will pay for extended support
- The firm had already proposed a similar system for Windows 7, which allowed some to use this OS safely until 2023
