According to the Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel (PEPE), train 4245 was forced to reverse on the Athens Suburban line as he had received an order from a Station Master (Teleomikisi S.K.A.) to enter the wrong line (and specifically the one of the Metro) in the area of Dukisis Placentia.

The station master who sent a Suburban train on a subway line is off duty!

The managing director of OSE, Panagiotis Terezakis, speaking on SKAI radio, said that a traffic controller made a mistake, and for that he was punished 9 has been taken out of service), while he blamed the driver of HELLENIC TRAIN who violated two traffic lights, which told him that he was entering a Metro line.

The incident was reported to the Railway Regulatory Authority (RAS) by the Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel (PEPE), which represents the train drivers, requesting an immediate investigation.

Prosecutor’s investigation into the incident with the Suburban train that entered the Metro line
Hellenic Train announcement

In a statement, Hellenic Train states that “the company is investigating the causes of the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, October 9, in which a Suburban train violated the entry signs on the METRO line at Dukissis Placentias station. The investigation is being carried out in cooperation with the competent authorities, while at the same time the disciplinary procedure has been activated for the attribution of responsibilities. The staff involved in the incident have been suspended.

The company follows strict security protocols in all its processes and implements modern training and evaluation systems for its staff.”

Hellenic Train, the announcement concludes, remains committed to the continuous improvement of the safety of the railway network, taking the necessary actions where necessary.

With its announcement, the OSE states:
“On Wednesday, October 9 at around 5:44 p.m., train 4245, running the KANTZA – ANO LIOSIA suburban route, headed towards the entrance of line 3 of the STASY. The route is due to a drawing error by the Traffic Controller of the SKA”.

The following are highlighted for this event:

1. In no case was there the slightest danger for the passengers of both the suburban train and those of the Metro. The train in question moved on a signal-marked (i.e. safe route), but which did not have accreditation for use in terms of Metro trains.
2. The movement of both the train in question and the rest is done by signalling, remote control that has been operating normally since 2004.
3. Both the suburban trains and those of the metro have the same interoperable gauge, which implies the absolute compatibility of gauges, so even if it entered the metro line it would not be “wedged” in the tunnel, as excessively mentioned in a related publication.
4. The train driver of the suburban train, although he saw the 2 light signals whose indicators warned him about the train entering the Metro lines, nevertheless violated both of them and after passing them, he stopped and contacted the SKA.
5. Appropriate reversal instructions were then given and the normal route re-routed.
Epigrammatically:
1. All train movements are made by signaling – remote control.
2. There was no opposing train movement, but possible movement of an unauthorized train on a metro line.
3. The train driver violated two traffic lights, the indications of which gave him a clear warning of a possible entry into an unauthorized track.
4. The traffic controller was immediately made available and retrained with the question of his further employment as a traffic controller.
