Hashem Madkour, Dean of the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, Red Sea Branch, revealed that the shark that killed a young Russian man a few days ago was “embalmed,” stressing that “this is what is used with such types of marine life.”
Madkour explained, in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”, that “following the process of dissecting the fish and taking the necessary samples from it to examine it and study its behavior, all the fish’s guts were emptied, as well as its meat, while preserving the entire external structure, and it was mummified for display in the Institute’s museum, which monitors the history of life.” Marine organisms”.
The official pointed out that “there is a proposal that is currently being studied to commemorate the Russian youth who was killed by the fish, by writing the story of the accident on a marble plaque next to it in the museum, as well as placing a picture of the young man with an obituary for him.”
Madkour noted that “the practice in those cases is that in the event of a fish of this type or other species that are rarely caught except in compelling circumstances, such as what happened with the Russian youth, it is embalmed and put on display in the museum following taking the necessary scientific study from it.”
And he went on to explain that “the Museum of the Institute of Marine Sciences in Hurghada is more than 80 years old and contains mummified models of various types of marine organisms in the Red Sea, and includes all kinds of sharks in it.” He added that “the museum has a stuffed shark of the same type that attacked the well-known Russian youth.” In the name of Tiger.
He concluded his speech by saying: “The fish that attacked the Russian youth is 3 meters and 20 centimeters long, weighs half a ton, and is approximately 8 years old. It will be available to visitors in the museum along with the rest of the other stuffed animals in it.”
A shark had attacked a young Russian man off the coast of Hurghada, killing him, on Thursday, and it was officially announced that it had been caught for dissection and study of its behavior.
Hurghada .. hunting “predatory shark”
Earlier, the head of the nature protection sector at the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, Mohamed Salem, told Sky News Arabia that the fish was caught with the aim of “dissecting it and explaining the reason that led to the imbalance that made it consider humans as one of its sources of nutrition, unlike nature.”
Salem explained that the “Tiger” shark is “one of the well-known species commonly found in the Red Sea and is not alien to it, but its aggressive behavior on humans is the strange thing.”
He noted that “the initial investigation revealed that this fish was most likely behind two previous attacks on the coasts of Hurghada and Marsa Alam, last year and the previous year.”
