The electronic banking business performed well in 2021

The overall electronic payment activity in Morocco showed good achievements at the end of 2021.

Indeed, total transactions including cash withdrawal transactions on the network of ATMs, payment transactions with merchants and e-Merchants, payment transactions on ATMs and Cash Advance transactions, by bank cards, Moroccan and foreign, reached 442.2 million operations for a total amount of 317.6 billion DH. The activity therefore shows an increase of 18% in number and 15% in amount compared to the year 2020.

In detail, merchant sites and invoice sites affiliated with the CMI carried out 20.7 million online payment transactions using bank cards, whether Moroccan or foreign, up 45%. This corresponds to a total amount of 7.7 billion DH, an increase of 28%. Unsurprisingly, the activity remains very strongly dominated by Moroccan cards up to 96.2% in number of transactions and 94.2% in amount.

For their part, merchants and eMerchants affiliated with the CMI saw their payment transactions propel by 32% to nearly 112 million. They thus totaled 46 billion dirhams, an increase of 24.8% over the year 2021. Large-scale distribution monopolizes more than a quarter of payments, followed by the clothing sector with 10.6%, the hotel industry with 7.2%, stations with 7% and restaurants with 6.2%. The rest is split between furniture and electronics (5.6%), healthcare (5.4%) and other sectors. Overall, the cards issued by Moroccan banks reached an outstanding of 17.9 million cards, up 4.1% including 17.8 million Payment & Withdrawal cards under the Visa labels (+1.6% ), Mastercard (+17%) and the national brand CMI and Cobadge cmi-mastercard (+1.7%). On the other hand, the outstanding amount of private label cards fell by 57.5%.
