The electric car ban on the E18: The Swedish Road Administration is considering allowing electric cars onto the public transport lane again

The electric car ban has created queuing frustration in Asker and Bærum. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration will now consider allowing the electric cars back into the public transport lane at weekends, writes Aftenposten.

Asker mayor Lene Conradi (H) came out hard against the electric car refusal in a post on Facebook Sunday evening.

– This is madness! The traffic is now on local roads and the county roads, while the public transport lane on the E18 is empty towards Oslo, she writes.

Receives support from the Electric Vehicle Association

Before the ban came into force in May, electric cars were only allowed to drive in the public transport lane during rush hour if the driver had one extra passenger with him in the car. Apart from the rush, there were no restrictions for electric cars in the public transport zone.

Conradi receives support from Christina Bu, general secretary of the Electric Vehicle Association. She believes the Swedish Road Administration should consider softening the ban and making adjustments.

– My clear message is that it is time to test out plus two in the rush, i.e. that it is legal for electric cars to drive in the public transport lane if you have two passengers in the car, says Bu.

Considering leaving the cars for the weekends

Project manager for traffic in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Halvard Gavelstad, maintains that the electric car ban has worked. He nevertheless says that it may be appropriate to consider changes on the E18 west – from Asker towards Holmen and Slependen.

– Releasing the electric cars in the public transport lane at weekends, combined with a heavy traffic lane on weekdays, could be a relevant move, but this needs to be considered more closely, Gavelstad tells Aftenposten.

He says that they will look at various measures in close dialogue with the county council, the municipalities and other interest organisations.
