The National Electoral Chamber formally requested the Government to reconsider the proposal to move the holiday to next November 20 to avoid absenteeism in the ballot scheduled for the previous day.
The president of the National Electoral Chamber, Alberto Dalla Viasent a note to the Secretary General, Julio Vitobello, asking that “Consider the appropriate measures to move the holiday to next November 20, commemorating Sovereignty Day”the day following the second round of elections.
“This request is motivated by the need to encourage and guarantee the participation of citizens to vote in said elections, which would undoubtedly be affected if the extended weekend with the aforementioned holiday were maintained,” said the judicial official.
Two days ago, presidential spokesperson Gabriela Cerrutti had stated that a transfer of the date of the holiday was not under evaluation.
In radio statements, The Deputy Chief of Staff, Juan Manuel Olmos, confirmed that the holiday will not be altered because it is already scheduled that way by law.
“It is not going to be modified. Disarming it is disarming several Argentinians’ vacations and the truth is that we don’t think so. “If there are Argentines who scheduled their breaks, rescheduling it now seems to me like it would bring more problems than benefits,” he explained.
However, the decision is not closed and there is still time for a change to be made to the holiday date.
In the PASO, the level of absenteeism was a record, with participation that did not reach 70%. In the general elections last Sunday, the percentage of Argentines who went to the polls was higher (77%)although in any case at a lower level than in past elections.
