The election in France: – Turnout has been decisive

– This year it was decisive that there was a record high turnout. There are more people who have gotten off the sofa and primarily contributed to the republican front, says Kjerstin Aukrust, associate professor of French literature and regional studies at the University of Oslo, to NTB on Sunday just following the latest forecast for the French election was ready.

– It is an electoral tradition in France that you vote for the candidate required to beat the far right, and the Republican front was stronger than expected this year, says Aukrust.

The Republican Front is a term for when French voters mobilize to vote for all possible candidates other than those who represent the extreme right wing.

– They vote for the candidate who is best placed to beat the far right, regardless of where they stand politically.

It is still too early to speculate on who will be the left-wing New People’s Front’s prime ministerial candidate, she believes.

Three hours before the polling stations closed, almost 60 percent of voters had cast their ballots, and the election might be the election with the highest turnout in over 40 years.

– This result was certainly a surprise, says Aukrust.
