The Eiffel Tower has been closed for the fourth day due to a strike by workers

It is the second stoppage in two months at one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations in protest against what unions say is insufficient investment.

Tower operator SETE advised guests who bought tickets to check the website before arriving or postpone their visit. E-ticket holders have been asked to check their email for further information.

According to the operator, those who have already purchased tickets will be reimbursed the amount paid for them.

They also called on the city of Paris “to comply with reasonable financial requirements to ensure the survival of the monument and the company that manages it”.

Their main claim is that the city authorities demand, according to them, an excessive rent from the operator of the Eiffel Tower, which results in a lack of funds for necessary maintenance work.

Trade union representatives told the AFP news agency that they had a meeting with the management of SETE in the afternoon.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the Eiffel Tower suffered about 120 million. euro loss.

Since then, its operator has received 60 million. EUR 100 million in recapitalization funds, which the unions say is insufficient given the need for major maintenance work, including repainting.

Visitor traffic to the Eiffel Tower dropped sharply during the COVID-19 period due to quarantine and travel restrictions, but it is expected to increase to 5.9 million in 2022 and 6.3 million last year. visitors.
