Dr. Jamal Shaaban, former dean of the National Heart Institute, answered this question by saying, “Mental disorders, especially fear, have negative effects on heart health.”

Shaaban added that fear increases the risk of exposure to factors leading to cardiovascular disease, stressing that it causes a sharp rise in blood pressure.

And he pointed out that the imbalance of the heart’s electricity is one of the complications resulting from fear, explaining that it is a disease that causes irregular heartbeats, which may lead to its sudden cessation of work, and then death.

He explained that patients with phobias are among the groups most at risk of developing a dangerous disease known as broken heart syndrome, whose symptoms include “chest pain and shortness of breath.”

According to the “Northwestern Medicine” website, during fear, the brain secretes more stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which cause oxygen-laden blood to be sent to the extremities in large quantities.

From the lack of blood supply to the heart, blood pressure and beats increase, and part of its muscle may be damaged.

Shaaban concluded his speech by recommending that people with phobia try to avoid stress as much as possible, and undergo behavioral psychotherapy sessions under the supervision of a mental health professional, in order to acquire skills that help them control their emotions and feelings.
