The Economist’s Annual Ranking: The Most Livable Cities in the World 2021

Every year, the British “Economist” group examines the quality of life in major cities around the world. Zurich and Geneva are still doing well, but are falling behind. Nothing has changed at the top compared to the previous year.

The Economist examined 173 cities. The Swiss cities of Zurich and Geneva did well. The city on the Limmat is in sixth place, Geneva follows one place behind.

Compared to the previous year, however, the two cities have lost places. The year before, Zurich was third, Geneva sixth. It’s a trend that’s emerging.

The most livable cities 1. Vienna 2. Copenhagen 3. Melbourne 4. Sydney 5. Vancouver

6. Zürich

7. Geneva and Calgary 9. Toronto 10. Osaka and Auckland

Some European cities have clearly fallen behind. While their ratings have not deteriorated, cities in Asia and the Middle East have caught up, the report says. Strikes and violent protests in Western Europe also weighed on valuations.

Vienna again the leader

The index assesses the factors of stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and culture and environment. In this combination, as in the previous year, Vienna swings out at the top. Austria’s capital scored with a high level of security, good public facilities and a rich cultural offering. Behind Vienna, Copenhagen and Melbourne completed the podium.

At the other end of the table is the Syrian capital Damascus. On the second last and thus 165th place is Kiev. It is the least livable European city. You have the lowest value in infrastructure, “thanks to Russian bombs”.
