Argentina rose to the ranks of the major economic powers with the export of beef in the 1940s and 1950s – war-torn Europe urgently needed protein from the Global South. Today, soy and lithium are among Argentina’s most sought-following export products. The car manufacturer BMW, for example, sources the lithium for its electric cars from an Argentine deposit that is mined by the US company Livent. The Argentine state is pushing the development of further deposits. Most of the soy goes to China, where it is used in fattening pigs, chickens and cattle.
