In an interview with Sky News Arabia, the US President’s chief advisor, Amos Hockstein, revealed the background to Joe Biden’s thanking Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, during the G20 summit.
Hockstein mentioned that the leadership in the UAE was behind the “economic link” project between India and Europe across the Middle East, saying: “I will say that it was the leadership in the UAE that came up with the initial idea of connecting us, and the national security advisors met, and our leaders talked regarding “We felt that we had made enough progress to be able to announce a memorandum of understanding of this kind. We must now move forward and continue implementing it.”
He continued: “I believe that this project will change the rules of the game in the region, and that is why it brings together the leaders of India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Japan and Europe.”
In response to a question regarding the background of the US President’s thanks to his Emirati counterpart during the G20 summit, Hockstein explained: “Well, first of all, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed decided not to be one of the speakers in front of the audience. President Biden believed that it was important for the world to know the decisive role he played.” Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed in this announcement.
He added: “He thanked him personally during the meeting, but he wanted to do so publicly because if he did not speak publicly, President Biden would speak on his behalf and thank him in front of everyone so that they would realize the decisive role he played in moving this matter forward.”
He added, “And, of course, I acknowledge the importance and centrality of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in this project in which we were all involved.”
Biden said in the speech he delivered during the G20 summit in India a few days ago: “I would like to thank Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed… Thank you, thank you, thank you… I don’t think we would be here if it weren’t for you,” and then applause broke out in the hall.
