Ambassador of the Ecomuseum zoo mission, the river otter Pika passed away during a veterinary examination on Thursday, leaving “a huge void in the hearts” of the responders.

After detecting “a few potentially worrying signs”, the elderly otter’s care team put him under anesthesia during an examination. However, the animal went into cardiac arrest.

“This is unfortunately always a risk during medical procedures, but with her well-being being our priority, it was important to us to carry out this examination regardless, as such concerns are never left to chance,” the zoo said in a statement. , Friday.

“Despite the strenuous efforts of our team to resuscitate her, Pika has left us,” he said.

Pika was born in the wild, but was captured for the fur trade. After being rescued, she found refuge at the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue zoo in 2016 with other companions.

“Pika was much more than a resident animal in our zoo. She was an ambassador for our mission, an important vehicle for raising awareness, and a constant reminder of the fragility of our ecosystem and the need to protect our biodiversity,” said David Rodrigue, General Manager of the Ecomuseum Zoo.

The latter mentioned that the establishment would be ready to welcome other river otters in need.
