Rajae Maouane, co-president of Ecolo, believes that “Ecology is the future of the economy”. Ecolo is looking to project itself into the ecological transition for the future legislature by changing the economic model and encouraging companies to do so through public aid. The Greens will discuss the means to achieve this at a congress on April 15, 2023, in Mons.
Barbara Trachte, Secretary of State Ecolo in charge of Economic Transition to the Brussels-Capital Region, launched the economic shift to accompany companies on the path of transition toward being able to deploy a more virtuous economy that is respectful of humans and resources.
Jean-Marc Nollet, co-president of Ecolo, proposed an ecological transition fund of around one billion for Wallonia to finance this shift. The cost of inaction is far greater than the cost of transition. Ecolo is determined to reach the level of ambition seen in Brussels in Wallonia.
On the issue of nuclear power, George-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR, declared that his party would not go to a future federal government if there are no plans for new construction of nuclear power plants. Ecolo, on the other hand, aims to arrive in 2050 at an energy park that is 100% clean, 100% renewable because it is good for the planet, the wallet, and would make the country independent from large foreign powers. Ecolo will seek to partner with parties that share this vision.
“Ecology is the future of the economy”, insists Rajae Maouane, co-president of Ecolo on La Première. More than a year from the next legislative, regional and European elections, Ecolo already wants to project itself into the ecological transition for the future legislature. The Greens say they want to change the economic model by encouraging companies to do so, in particular through public aid. How ? With what means? This will be the subject of a congress this Saturday April 15, 2023 in Mons.
“The business world did not wait for politics to move forward. Many have already started. In Brussels, Barbara Trachte (Secretary of State Ecolo in charge of Economic Transition to the Brussels-Capital Region, editor’s note) launched the economic shift, that is to say the fact of accompanying companies on the path of transition to be able to deploy a much more virtuous economy which is respectful of humans, which is respectful of resources.
Reorient public investments
To finance this, Jean-Marc Nollet, co-president of Ecolo, mentioned an ecological transition fund of around one billion for Wallonia. “Indeed, it has a cost and therefore public investments must be redirected. The cost of inaction is far greater than the cost of transition. […] It’s progressing in Brussels. We would like that, in Wallonia, we also reach this level of ambition.”
On the nuclear issue, George-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR, declared that his party would not go to a future federal government if there are no plans for new construction of nuclear power plants. Is a coalition with the MR still possible for Ecolo under these conditions? “We will go with the parties who want to arrive in 2050 at an energy park that is 100% clean, 100% renewable because it is good for the planet, it is good for the wallet and it makes us totally independent from large foreign powers.”
In conclusion, Ecolo is determined to lead the charge in transitioning towards an ecological future for the economy. With a clear plan to encourage companies to shift towards a more sustainable model and reorient public investments, they aim to create a much more virtuous economy that is respectful of humans and resources. While their stance on nuclear power may cause some tension with other parties, their ultimate goal is to move towards a clean, renewable energy park by 2050. The upcoming Congress in Mons on April 15, 2023 will shed more light on their plans and strategies, and hopefully inspire other political actors to follow suit in this necessary transition towards a more sustainable future.
