Due to climate change, we are increasingly spending holidays in Norway and Sweden. This is what travel umbrella organization ANVR says, which sees the number of Dutch people going to Scandinavia increase by tens of percent compared to 2019, the last year before corona.

For example, the number of Dutch people who went to Sweden last month was 37 percent more than in 2019, while Norway almost doubled in that period. There is also a clear increase compared to last year. This is especially true in spring and summer.
According to the ANVR, climate change probably plays an important role in the increased popularity of Scandinavian countries. “Younger people in particular often want to hike on holiday. But that is difficult when it is very hot. Then it is better to cool off in Sweden or Norway,” says an ANVR spokesperson.
“Another factor is that those countries are at the forefront of electric driving. So it’s easier to go there with your electric car than in Southern Europe.”
Scandinavian countries also had a somewhat more flexible corona policy. That still attracts some people, thinks the travel umbrella.
2023 might be a pivotal year due to heat wave
This year it was extremely warm in southern Europe for a long time, with temperatures well above 40 degrees. “In the media, the link was clearly made with climate change. We think that 2023 can therefore be a pivotal year and that even more Dutch people will go to Scandinavia in the coming years,” says the ANVR.
The association is thinking mainly of Sweden and Norway and to a lesser extent also of Denmark. Finland is less popular, while Iceland has been attracting large numbers of Dutch tourists for some time.
Nevertheless, Spain and Italy are still popular holiday destinations. Spain in particular receives more than a million Dutch visitors every year, while Sweden, for example, receives thousands of tourists. There is currently no question of a massive shift from southern to northern Europe.
