The Dubois Trade Talks: Assessing the Latest Rumors and Speculation in Winnipeg and Montreal

2023-05-23 17:38:51

It’s hard to believe that Pierre-Luc Dubois’ future is in Winnipeg.

After all, we know the many rumors about him since his agent said he wanted to play for the Canadiens and that’s why the subject continues to make people react in Montreal, even if there is uncertainty concerning his contractual situation.

What we do know, however, is that the Canadiens and the Jets have had discussions in recent months about a possible trade. Kent Hughes and Kevin Cheveldayoff spoke to each other during the 2022-23 season and they also negotiated (repeatedly) last summer.

That being said… The conversation seems to have taken a slightly different turn in the last few days.

Murat Ates, Jets correspondent for The Athletic, wrote an article in which we read that at some point in the discussions between Hughes and Cheveldayoff, the Jets wanted to obtain Nick Suzuki in a possible trade sending Dubois to Montreal.

One version of the discussion I heard said that Winnipeg was after Nick Suzuki – which Montreal didn’t even consider – while the Canadiens tried to build a package around Christian Dvorak, Josh Anderson and a first-round pick. – Murat Ates

In the end, the Canadian would not have wanted to part with his current captain, which is somewhat understandable.

Hughes instead saw Christian Dvorak, Josh Anderson and a first-round pick as interesting pieces to acquire the Quebecer.

wow. That’s what I said to myself when I read Murat Ates’ article.

Already there, Nick Suzuki against Pierre-Luc Dubois… I probably wouldn’t even make the trade if it was 1v1.

It is sure that the Jets were and will be greedy listening to the offers for the main interested party. We are talking about a center player who has a good size, who is able to hold his own defensively and who has interesting qualities from an offensive point of view.

There are players similar to Dubois in the NHL. But when these players become available for the different NHL teams, it’s different because they don’t run the streets every year.

We agree that to receive a good player via the transaction market, you usually have to pay the price to obtain his services. But, to go from there to exchanging one of the best players in the organization of the Canadiens in Nick Suzuki, the one who acts as captain since the beginning of the year… It is too much to ask in my opinion.

And I’m sure you have the same speech.

Ates also speculates in his script that Kirby Dach might be a good middle ground for both parties. I wonder if Kent Hughes sees things the same way, though.

Again, it is above all the Dubois contract that is a bit problematic because of all the uncertainty that reigns over the file. Recall that he is eligible for full free agency in the summer of 2024 and that is why it is said that it would be surprising to see him sign long-term with the Jets this summer.

Chances are he’ll be playing somewhere other than Winnipeg next year and that’s where it gets interesting. If he decides to sign a hostile offer and the Jets match the offer in question, they won’t be able to trade him for a year and they will lose him for nothing in the free agent market next summer.

The question to ask now is this. If he plays somewhere other than Winnipeg next year… Will it be in Montreal, or somewhere else?

A lot of

– Absolutely.

Verses! ????????

– Very good question.

– Seen the same…

– My God.

– Fans who talk nonsense like that shouldn’t even be allowed to attend games.
