The drums of “war” between Trump & Harris sounded 2024-07-25 05:14:40

Republican former President Donald Trump, who will run for a second term in November, wants to convince ambivalent voters that his yet-to-be new challenger, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, is responsible for two problems that he emphasizes as he believes they will secure him the victory: the immigration crisis, the “invasion” that both he and members of his faction accuse of Joe Biden’s administration, and the rising cost of living.

Sources in the tycoon’s campaign explain that he will present Ms. Harris as a “co-governor” of policies on the two problems, which are causing increasing discontent in the US.

President Biden’s announcement yesterday that he was abandoning the campaign in favor of Vice President Harris was another spectacular twist in the election campaign, just eight days after the assassination attempt on candidate Trump.

Sources of the Reuters news agency noted that preparation for the possibility that Mr. Biden would end his campaign and his vice president would secure the Democratic nomination had already begun, weeks in advance.

It will be “easier to beat” Kamala Harris than Joe Biden, Mr Trump assured CNN after President Biden’s announcement.

Sources in his campaign explained that they will identify it as much as possible with the Biden administration’s immigration policy. They will also link it to economic policy.

Polls consistently indicate that Americans are unhappy with high food and fuel prices and high interest rates, which make buying a home elusive for many.

She has been a “co-governor of Biden’s vision,” summed up a Trump campaign adviser who spoke to Reuters during the Republican convention in Milwaukee last week. If they put “‘Kamala who cackles’ at the head of the ballot, we’re fine,” he added, repeating the insult the campaign has been using against the vice president of late.

The “super PAC” codenamed Make America Great Again Inc. said yesterday it was withdrawing ads against Mr. Biden that had been scheduled to run in the hard-fought states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania and replacing them with messages attacking Ms. Harris.

A 30-second commercial accuses the vice president of hiding from the American people that President Biden was unable to carry out his duties and, more broadly, all the evils that the administration brought. “Kamala knew Joe couldn’t do the job, so she did it. Here’s what it did: border invasion, runaway inflation, the American dream dead.”

Donald Trump, known for using insulting and openly abusive expressions when referring to his opponents, gave his fans a taste, in his appearance in Michigan last Saturday, of what Kamala Harris should expect in the near future.

“I call her ‘Kamala who cackles.’ Have you heard her laugh? She’s crazy. You can tell a lot from how someone laughs. She’s crazy—she’s a goddamn person,” he snapped.

However, although Vice President Harris currently seems to have a good chance of being the Democratic nominee, the party has not yet decided and it is not necessary how she will secure the nomination.

If she is indeed the candidate, the 59-year-old African-American woman with Asian roots will add a completely different dynamic to the race, as her differences with Mr. Trump, in terms of generations and in terms of cultural references, are chaotic.

Americans have never before elected a woman to the presidency in the 248 years of US history.

Some polls suggest Ms. Harris could prove a tough opponent for Mr. Trump. In the hypothetical scenario of a showdown between the two, they voted tied (44%) in a survey by the Ipsos institute on behalf of Reuters conducted on July 15 and 16.

USA: Biden’s announcement

In a letter published by the American president announced that, bowing to pressure, he had quit, in the “interest of the party and the country”, leading the campaign into uncharted waters.

US Elections: Harris Supporters and Neutrals – What’s Happening Inside the Democrats

Many executives of the Democrats rushed yesterday Sunday (21/7) to support their vice president USA.

She is currently considered most likely to be the party’s nominee for the US presidency in November after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, but some of the party’s most prominent figures, notably former President Barack Obama and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, have not commented.

After weeks of infighting in Democratic ranks over whether or not Mr. Biden, 81, should remain on the campaign trail, it is critical for Ms. Harris to rally the party behind her with less than 100 days to go until the polls open.

But there are plenty of doubts in the Democratic party about whether and to what extent Kamala Harris can beat former President Trump. Some faction officials are suggesting that a mini-process be organized to select the strongest candidate ahead of the August convention in Chicago.

Outgoing President Biden himself came out in support of Ms. Harris yesterday, in a separate statement, following the release of his explosive letter announcing his abandonment of the effort. He was followed, almost immediately, by the powerful group of African-American congressmen, several key donors, caucuses and super PACs (“political action groups”), among them Priorities USA and Unite the Country.

“I want to offer my full support and endorsement to Kamala to be our party’s candidate this year. Democrats — it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it,” Mr. Biden said via X yesterday.

The list of Democrats continued to grow as the day wore on. As of last night, she had been endorsed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Sapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Washington Senator Patti Marie, South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal…

An adviser to Reed Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn and a major Democratic donor, called Ms. Harris the “personification of the American dream,” noting that she is a child of immigrants, and “the personification of toughness” as she served as California’s top prosecutor.

All 50 state Democratic leaders have announced they will endorse Kamala Harris. Likewise the Democratic delegates to the convention from the states of Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama’s former first lady and secretary of state, also endorsed the vice president.

US Elections: The iconic figures of the faction are neutral

However, party figures such as Mr. Obama and Ms. Pelosi have refrained from endorsing Ms. Harris, or any other candidate.

A source briefed on his intentions said the former president will seek to unify the party after the candidate is named.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who praised President Biden’s decision to step aside, also chose not to comment.

Sen. Peter Wells, the first Democratic senator to publicly call on the president to quit, has called for an “open” convention, meaning that delegates should be allowed to choose the nominee.

A Democratic donor said he would support a ballot with Ms. Harris and Pennsylvania Gov. Sapiro as his vice-presidential candidate in order for Democrats to win the contested state.

It is unclear at this stage who or what Kamala Harris would choose as her running mate or running mate if she did indeed secure the nomination.

Also, a grassroots organization that had endorsed former Republican nominee Nikki Haley and supported President Biden under the name “Haley Voters for Biden” changed its name yesterday to “Haley Voters for Harris.”
