Efraín Cifuentes González, alias Negro Sosa, who had been sentenced to 18 years in prison for drug trafficking, was released from prison on March 8 thanks to the fact that he benefited from reduced sentences for good conduct and work.

El Negro Sosa was serving an 18-year prison sentence in Mariscal Zavala, for crimes related to drug trafficking, but this morning he was released from prison by order of the Criminal Execution Court.

It was confirmed that Cifuentes González benefited from a reduced sentence for good behavior and for work performed in prison and that is why he regained his freedom.

According to the conviction, Negro Sosa integrated and directed a criminal structure dedicated to drug trafficking from Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico since 2009. In addition, in Guatemala he operated in Izabal and Petén.

On July 14, 2014, Cifuentes had evaded the authorities and escaped to Mexican territory, where he had a safe house, which is located 10 kilometers from the border in Petén.

He collaborated with the Sinaloa cartel

The Ministry of the Interior indicated that the drug trafficker collaborated with the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico, and was also linked to the Zetas and Knights Templar cartels.

A report by the magazine Insightcrime, on drug trafficking groups in Guatemala, revealed at that time that Cifuentes González’s group was based in the communities of Santa Rosita and Los Laureles, in La Libertad, Petén, on the banks of the Usumacinta River and the border with Mexico. It is a strategic location for drug trafficking and livestock smuggling.

Efraín Cifuentes González, el Negro, and Miguel Sosa Cifuentes were the main figures of this local network, who maintained strong control in these communities.

Captured following confrontation

On November 7, 2014, Negro Sosa was arrested near his house located in the Santa Rosita hamlet, Las Cruces, Petén.

The operation by the anti-drug forces lasted 48 hours in the jungle area and ended in a confrontation, as the drug trafficker tried to flee.

At the time of the shooting, which lasted regarding 20 minutes, the security of the alleged drug trafficker – between six or eight men – left him abandoned and he got lost in the jungle. He might not flee with them, due to his overweight. He was finally arrested in the yard of his home.

The authorities reported that, during the capture, Negro Sosa had a rifle in his possession and that they also confiscated other heavy-caliber weapons. The drug trafficker was transported by air from Petén to the capital and in the operation six of his bodyguards were captured.

The transfer

According to the investigation, the accused used to transport drugs twice a week, and he made sure that his network did not carry more than one hundred kilos of cocaine on each trip.

The drugs passed through San Benito, Las Cruces and La Libertad, Petén. Then he used boats or the ferry, on the Usumacinta River, to take the narcotics to the Benemérito de las Américas village, in Chiapas, where they were collected.

The routes it used were constantly monitored, and if any group moved drugs through its territories, it knocked down—stealed—the shipments and physically eliminated its rivals.

Cifuentes González is the owner of a hotel in Petén, and had been under investigation since 2009, detectives reported.
