The drop in consumption deepened due to electoral and economic uncertainty

Retail sales of Córdoba businesses fell 4.7% year-on-year in September measured in volumes, as a result of the effect of inflation on the purchasing power of salaries, added to political and economic uncertainty.

The data was provided by the Commercial Federation of Córdoba (Fedecom) through its affiliated chambers and shopping centers.

With this data, there are now 16 months of consecutive interannual contractions. It is worth remembering that in September 2022, sales had decreased 5.4% compared to September 2021.

“We merchants are very worried. We are experiencing an unprecedented situation. More uncertainty and complications were added to the devaluation that the national government applied following the Paso and the constant rise in price. Now many banks are stopping their money requirements to be able to pay suppliers, due to lack of pesos,” said Fausto Brandolin, president of Fedecom.

Of the 11 items surveyed by the entity, only pharmacy registered an increase, the rest were falls in the year-on-year comparison. The results by category are:

  • Food and drinks: -6.5%.
  • Sports and recreation items: -4.7%.
  • Footwear and leather goods: -6.3%.
  • Appliances and electronic items: -6.8%.
  • Pharmacy: 2.5%.
  • Hardware, electrical materials and construction materials: -5.1%.
  • Clothing: -5.3%.
  • Toy stores and bookstores: -4.3%.
  • Furniture and decoration: -3.4%.
  • Tires and spare parts: 4.8%.
  • Perfumery and cosmetics: -3.2%.

In the city

Meanwhile, the survey in the city’s commercial corridors shows a similar trend, according to data from the Córdoba Chamber of Commerce through the Commercial Observatory.

In September 2023, 75% of businesses had sales below their expectations and only 17.5% managed to meet them.

According to the report, there were drops of 9.53% year-on-year in unit sales and 8.06% in profitability.

Compared to August, the activity showed a decrease of 10.2% in unit sales and 7.8% in profitability.

“Once once more, commercial premises located in shopping malls had lower percentages of decrease in sales. Those located in central galleries registered a greater than average drop,” he highlighted.

According to the Commercial Observatory, the clothing-footwear category was the one with the fewest sales per unit, followed by toys-gifts and leather goods. Meanwhile, the drop in electronics, computing and perfumery was lower than the general average.
