Sun in the back, we fly over the magnificent expanses of grass of the Bertichères golf course in Chaumont-en-Vexin, veering at the edge of the forest to go up smoothly against the flow of course number 17 and fly away in the sky facing the sun, just above the small chapel. At no time is our camera faulty. Shadows, backlighting, gusts of wind… Nothing disturbs the clarity and stability of the image. It looks like it was taken from a sequence shot of a big-budget action movie.
We tested the most advanced drone in the Chinese DJI’s arsenal, the Mavic 3 Pro Cine Premium. This top-of-the-range model is distinguished by the presence of a shooting system integrating three cameras with several focal lengths (24 mm, 70 mm and 166 mm). It thus allows 28x zooms with staggering quality, in both photos and videos. The wide-angle main lens (f2.8 aperture), supplied by Hasselblad, captures images in 12-bit RAW format with an exceptional dynamic range of 12.8 stops.

The device is capable of recording 5.1K video at 50 frames per second or 4K at 120 fps for spectacular slow motion. A new 10-bit D-Log M color profile ensures captures with up to 1 billion colors, even in high-contrast scenarios such as sunrises and sunsets. The Cine version we tested also supports encoding of Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422 and Apple ProRes 422 LT formats in order to benefit from the maximum information before grading the images. Finally, an integrated 1 TB SSD hard drive allows you to film for hours without worrying about carrying any memory card.
A trio of fearsome goals
Delivered with the DJI RC remote control (with integrated screen), the Mavic 3 Pro is pure happiness. Stable, powerful, easy to steer, it responds to the finger and the eye to perform all maneuvers. It inherits the excellent behavior of its ancestor, the Mavic 3, while adding a trio of formidable lenses. Like him, he has eight optical sensors positioned around the body in order to detect obstacles and modify the trajectory in the event of danger (bypassing or braking). Likewise, it incorporates intelligent modes to follow a character or take shots by performing predefined movements. We really appreciated the quality of the video feedback from the remote control (live stream transmission in HD 1080p/60fps).

DJI announces a range of 15 km but, due to french legislation, the transmission power remains limited and the actual range is more around 2 km. We were especially impressed by the amazing quality of the videos. In dark areas as well as in backlight, the Mavic 3 Pro produces high quality footage. By exploiting the Apple ProRes HQ format, it was possible to retouch them to give them a truly cinematic look with a simple Mac M1. Note, however, that the files produced are extremely large. Count 80 GB for a 5-minute clip. It will be necessary to ensure that you have large and fast hard disks. We thus experienced that a simple USB2 connection was incapable of broadcasting this type of stream. Even in USB3, we encountered fluidity problems (before processing). The DJI Mavic 3 Cine Premium is an ideal choice for small productions and discerning videographers. It is sold with the DJI RC remote control and a pack of three batteries at the price of 4599 €. It’s still a big budget. Some will prefer the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Fly More pack. At 3499 €, it produces exactly the same images but has to ignore the SSD disk and the Apple ProRes format. Finally, for those who already have a DJI remote control, the drone alone is sold for €2099. It is immediately much more accessible. Last important detail: the drone exceeds the weight of 900 g. It is therefore imperative to declare it on the AlphaTango site and to follow an online mini-training to have the right to fly it in France.
