The Montreal company Éditions de Robes, which manufactured all its clothes here, is closing its doors, victim of the drastic drop in its income during the pandemic.
Political figures like Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, Véronique Hivon, Valérie Plante, Dominique Anglade, actresses like Anne-Marie Cadieux or Anne Dorval, all came to dress at this designer of Montreal dresses.
In 10 years of existence, she might sell thousands of copies of each dress at each collection. But the pandemic will have got the better of this formerly successful trade.
“We had renewed ourselves, we had worked hard, but COVID arrived and that changed everything in our reality,” said Julie Pesant, owner and editor-in-chief.
According to a Statista study, revenues in the clothing industry fell in 2019-2020 by 19%.
Quebec companies are not exempt from these drops in income, and buying local is important like “l’Aubainerie, Dynamite, La Vie en Rose, Simons, but also independent retailers”, quoted Mathieu St-Arnaud, director General of the Metropolitan Fashion Cluster.
Éditions de Robes is now selling clearance clothing on its site internetthen close shop.
