Storm Ciaran has barely passed before we are already talking regarding another windy day for Saturday. If the storm threshold will probably not be reached, we will have to be wary of this episode which will certainly not be the last of its kind. “We are expecting some gusts of fairly high intensity this Saturday, as we have observed in the models in recent days,” confirms Pascal Mormal, meteorologist at IRM. We will not reach the values of this Thursday, we are talking more regarding a windy day, but without any particular excess.”
We still expect winds of up to 80 km/h in places, so we will have to be careful. This Thursday, the most remarkable figures were reached on the coast, in Zeebrugge, with 112 km/h or in Hainaut, in Chièvres, with 108 km/h. We also exceeded 100 km/h in the province of Antwerp. “There is still a possible gust of wind during next week, in the middle of the week a priori,” continues Pascal Mormal. We will be at the edge of the storm threshold once more, but not of the magnitude of Storm Ciaran.”
After Ciaran, the Domingos storm will hit Europe: what to expect?
It’s actually a type of weather that settles in for a while. Other gales or storms are therefore to be feared in the coming weeks. “We often see this kind of scenario. In 2020 and 2022, we saw a succession of storms during the winter (up to 4 in February 2022, Editor’s note), and the best example is that of the winter of 1990. Between January 25 and March 1 , we were treated to nine storms! A low pressure rail was established over time with absolute records for Belgium on January 25, 1990.”
For this fall, “a fairly sustained oceanic low pressure flow is well established in our regions. It is sometimes pushed, like Thursday, by a powerful jet current which accentuates these windy episodes,” he explains. “It is rare to witness a sudden return of the sun in this type of situation and next week will therefore still be mixed.”
In Belgium, the number of storms has decreased since the 1960s: “We have not experienced any significant ones since February 2022”
In the longer term, we are still expecting rain, wind, but also mild weather. “It’s typical of this kind of weather, although we can see some small descents of polar air which can cool the atmosphere a little one day or another. But we are very far from the first shocks of winter, the first cold snap is not at all on the agenda. If we look at the general seasonal trends, we are talking regarding mildness, with a fairly strong anomaly of one to two degrees, for the next month and a half for Belgium and northwest Europe.”
