Daniel Medvedev has no doubt that Novak Djokovic is the best player in the history of tennis, and the world number three believes that his Serbian rival’s ability to win titles even when he is not on his day gives him an advantage over others.

Djokovic singled himself for a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open last month, one ahead of Rafael Nadal and three ahead of Roger Federer, and the Serb will be looking for his eighth Wimbledon title, which begins on Monday.

And if Djokovic wins the title, he will be equal to women’s tennis legend Margaret Court in the tally of 24 titles in major tournaments in the history of the game.

Medvedev told reporters: I do not know how he does what he does. I think if I’m right Novak has a 50 percent chance. I think he’s played 70 major tournaments and been to the final 35 (34) times. I don’t know how that could happen. Doesn’t he have bad days? Actually he is struggling like the others but in these bad days he can beat the opponent. This is difficult because the competition is between player and player and both want to win.

He added: I don’t know how he does it, and that’s why for me it’s the best in the history of tennis, but of course it’s controversial.

With Djokovic winning the Australian Open at the start of the year, the Serb has a chance of collecting all four Grand Slam titles in one year.

Medvedev had previously succeeded in beating Djokovic in the 2021 US Open final, denying the then world number two from achieving this achievement at the last hurdle of the season.

Medvedev said: I was happy that I succeeded in that. I don’t want to stop. I want to try to continue playing against him in the finals or against any other player. This is what I’ve been trying to do since then.
