The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) said Monday that the Novak Djokovic case has led to a series of events that have been “damaging on all fronts.”
The 20-time winner of Grand Slam tournaments was scheduled to compete in the Australian Open – which takes place between January 17 and 30 – and arrived at Melbourne Airport on January 5, but was not allowed to enter the country. Last Saturday it became known that Djokovic, who is not vaccinated, had tested positive by covid-19 in a PCR test conducted on December 16. In this context, the immigration authorities decided to cancel his visa, arguing that “previous infection with covid-19 is not considered a medical contraindication for vaccination once morest covid-19 in Australia.”
A few hours following Federal Judge Anthony Kelly cancel the cancellation of the Serbian’s visa and order the release of the tennis player, the ATP public a statement lamenting that “the series of events leading up to Monday’s court hearing have been detrimental on all fronts, including Novak’s well-being and preparation for the Australian Open.”
He also asked for a better “communication and enforcement” in entry rules to Australia for athletes.
