The decision of Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne to propel the Muslim Council of Belgium instead of the Executive of the Muslims of Belgium, which until recently acted as a representative body, has caused its share of turmoil in other recognized religions and in secularism. If their representatives refrained from criticizing in the city and the world over the past few weeks, it is by their own admission because they fear a backlash.

The Muslim Executive was not perfect, of course. Internal struggles, repeated postponement of elections supposed to renew its executives, suspicions of foreign interference… the pile of grievances is impressive. “Anyway, with them it was possible to work,” it is argued in other cults. Where we are worried about yet another “interference” from the minister.
