“The discussions were difficult”

A few days ago, soldiers overthrew Mohamed Bazoum to take power in Niger. While an ECOWAS intervention caused a lot of talk, a senior American diplomat, Victoria Nuland, went to meet the putschists in Niamey. According to the diplomat, the discussions were not easy and did not lead to a negotiated solution.

“Today, therefore, we had the chance to sit down with a large cross-section of Nigerien civil society. They are longtime friends of the United States. They are journalists. They are democratic activists. They are human rights activists. I had met a number of them on previous trips, as had the secretary. And so we had a frank exchange regarding the situation here. And then we met the self-proclaimed defense chief of this operation, General Barmou, and three of the colonels who supported him. I will say that these conversations were extremely frank and sometimes quite difficult because, once more, we were pushing for a negotiated solution. It wasn’t easy to get traction there. They are quite firm in their vision of how they want to proceed, and it is not in accordance with the constitution of Niger. Again, we were very candid regarding the issues. We kept the door open to continue talking. But once more, it was tough today, and I’m going to be upfront regarding that.”she said on the official website of the US government.
