Mongdol on the coast of Jeju is the pride of the region, having come down from Hallasan Mountain over a long period of time to create a unique coastal landscape.
Even Jeju’s beautiful coastal scenery is threatened as these rocks are disappearing due to indiscriminate development.

Aljakji, Naedo-dong, Jeju-si, famous for its pebble-like round stones.
The coast, which should be full of stones, has disappeared and is difficult to find, with only black sand remaining here and there.
This place was the pride of the region, with round pebbles creating a unique coastal landscape.
In recognition of its value, it was designated as a local tangible heritage 10 years ago, but its former appearance is no longer visible.
[고병규 / 제주시 내도동 (87세) : 서운하지 우리가. 그래도 내도를 찾아오는 사람은 지금도 ‘알작지가 어딥니까’해서 찾아오니까. 그래서 우리는 여기를 가르쳐 주죠. 그대신 ‘옛날같이 몽돌은 없다…. 몽글몽글한 돌은 없다’ 그렇게 설명을 하죠.]
[김두영 / 내도동 노인회장 ; 아쉽죠, 옛날에는 파도만 치면 샤르릉 샤르릉 해서 기타 치는 소리가 났어요, 음악처럼. 기타 치는 소리가 났는데 이제는 그런 것이 완전히 없어져 버렸어. 이제는 완전히 큰 돌하고 이런 알작지가 없어졌어. 몽돌이라는 존재가 없어져 버렸어, 완전히.]
Experts point to facilities built during development around the coast as the cause.
Due to the facilities installed on the coast, the tidal currents are changing and the rocks are being lost to the sea.
[강순석 / (사) 제주지질연구소장 이학박사 : 제주도 한라산 속에 있는 것이 외도천을 통해서 쌓인 겁니다, 주변에. 근데 내도포구가 어디 있습니까? 바로 지금 앞으로 외도천하고 내도 알작지, 내도마을 사이에 있잖아요. 그러니까 외도천에서 오는 자갈, 몽돌이 오는 길을 막아버렸어요. 그러니까 더 이상 오지 않습니다.]
