Emanuela Orlandi was born in 1968. Her father was a secular official who lived with his family in the Holy See. However, family members spent a lot of time in Rome. Emanuela (like her siblings) went to high school and music school there. The teenager also belonged to the Vatican choir. She was undoubtedly musically talented and perhaps she would have associated her adult life with music. Unfortunately, fate wrote a different, tragic scenario for her.
The day Emanuela disappeared
On June 22, 1983, Emanuela Orlandi was supposed to go to a flute lesson in the followingnoon. She asked her brother to drop her off in his car, but he refused. So the girl went by bus, as she usually did. Before starting classes at the music school, Emanuela called home. She talked for a while with her sister, to whom she told that she had received a job offer as a representative of one of the cosmetics companies. She also mentioned this offer to one of her friends that day.
Orlandi was supposed to go home following finishing her music lesson. She left school with her friend. The teenagers headed towards the bus stop. Emanuela, however, did not get into the bus, but into a green car. To this day, it is not known who was the driver of the vehicle and whether the 15-year-old knew this person.
Finally, evening came and the hours passed, and Emanuela was still not home. Her relatives began to get nervous because such a situation had never happened before. Family members quickly began searching for the teenager, but it turned out to be fruitless. The next day, the police received a missing person’s report, and information regarding it soon began to appear in the media.
Strange further clues in the case
Over the next few days, the Orlandi family received calls from people claiming to have met Emanuela. The details provided by the witnesses might indicate that they had actually seen the missing person. Soon the telephone calls began to become more and more peculiar. During one of the calls, the caller played a recording of a voice that the relatives identified as belonging to the missing woman. It looked like the 15-year-old had been kidnapped and was being held somewhere.
During another attempt at contact, the family of the missing person received information regarding where Emanuela’s items would be placed. The girl’s personal belongings were actually found in the indicated place, including a note most likely written by the abductee. Her relatives believed that it was her handwriting style.
Demands also began to appear for Ali Agca to be released in exchange for Orlandi’s release. This man was in prison for committing an attack on the then Pope, John Paul II, in 1981. However, it was not possible to determine whether the case of Emanuela’s disappearance was actually related to Ali Agca.
Who was responsible for the kidnapping of the 15-year-old girl?
Over the years, further sensational information has come to light. According to one theory, one of the Italian gangsters, Enrico De Pedis, was responsible for the girl’s disappearance. Others, in turn, pointed out that high-ranking Vatican clergy were involved in the kidnapping of Emanuela. However, these hypotheses might not be definitively confirmed or excluded.
Finally, there is a hypothesis that Orlandi’s disappearance was linked to the disappearance of Mirella Gregori. She was the same age as Emanuela and had disappeared only a month and a half earlier, also in the capital of Italy. These cases have many similarities. To this day, both missing persons have not been found, nor has it been explained what happened to them or who was behind their disappearance.
Emanuela’s brother, Pietro, is still fighting to give the case of his sister’s disappearance as much publicity as possible. The man believes that one day he will learn the truth. Pietro appeared, among others, in the documentary “Vatican Girl: The Vanishing of Emanuela Orlandi”, which was released on Netflix in 2022. This series presents many interesting details and scenarios.
Unfortunately, we will not find the answer to the question that remains a mystery to this day – what happened to Emanuela and is she still alive? Perhaps thanks to the media’s interest and the efforts of Emanuela’s relatives, one day the mystery of her disappearance will be solved.

What happened to millions of children around the world happened to her. This is the main reason for the 3 W’s. Too many people found out. It used to be that traces were covered, the Vatican was sacred, governments were sacred, kingdoms were admired, and now, when the awl is out of the bag, they started taxing everything they might. Take everything away from us because we know too much.

Yeah…, the Vatican area is a gloomy and full of secrets place. If someone who was a church dignitary was connected with the disappearance of these girls, the bodies of the murdered, or rather their remains, are buried in the catacombs where dignitaries were buried, no one looks there and only trusted people have access.
