The director is happy about the welcome: Now he wants to have whipped up an atmosphere

– I have felt very well received. Of course, there have been many meetings here at the beginning, but I am full of enthusiasm. It is also a fantastic geographical area with magnificent nature that I have come to, smiles Ian Marko Fog, who has moved into the harbor in Nykøbing Mors.

When the director has to welcome fans and sponsors to the first important home game of the season on Saturday, fate has it that it is his old club, Gummersbach, who will visit Thisted for an important European duel. The match can also be streamed live here on nordjyske.dk.

– It is a bit of a dream for me that we will meet the German team, which I myself represented for six seasons. There are still many regulars in the scenes from that time, whom I look forward to greeting, says Ian Marko Fog.

At the level of Flensburg

However, ticket sales for the qualifying match for the EHF European League are not quite as strong as the Mors-Thy director could have dreamed of. He points out that it is an insanely strong opponent who is coming to visit, and that the support can therefore be absolutely decisive.

Ian Marko Fog had his first day of work on July 18, and since then it has been all over the place with meetings. Now the fights are also starting to fall like pearls on a string.

– If it was Flensburg-Handewitt we had to meet, people would have been more crazy in the heat, but Gummersbach doesn’t quite have the same name with the handball people, but I would think will have to meet a team of basically the same high level. As recently as May, Gummersbach won by six goals in Flensburg, says Ian Marko Fog.

If Mors-Thy are to progress to the group stage in the European League, they must have a good starting point from Saturday’s home game.

Worth knowing about Vfl Gummersbach

  • The German club from the Cologne region has celebrated many great triumphs over the years
  • 12 x German champion and 5 x cup winner
  • 9 x winner of the European Cup
  • Finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season
  • Current profiles on the team:
  • Goalkeeper Dominik Kuzmanovic (participated in the Olympics for Croatia)
  • Left back Julian Köster (participated in the Olympics for Germany)
  • Winger Tilen Kodrin (participated in the Olympics for Slovenia)
  • Playmaker Kentin Mahé (French national team player, signed from Veszprem)
  • Right back Teitur Örn Einarsson (Icelandic national team player – picked up in Flensburg this summer)
  • Head coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson (former Icelandic national team player)

– We must try to take a win with us to the return match in Germany. Therefore, we also hope that we can whip up an atmosphere in Thy Hallen, so that Gummersbach is put under pressure, says Ian Marko Fog.

Extreme trainer

The Mors-Thy director is actually a little upset that it is his old teammate Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson who is the coach for Gummesbach.

– This means that we can forget all about the fact that they are going to underestimate us. He is extremely serious and thorough in his work and has also been out to say that we were the worst imaginable team Gummersbach could draw, explains Ian Marko Fog.

Financially, it is not a gold mine for Mors-Thy to have to play in the European League, even if you had to qualify for the group stage. In addition, there are too many expenses and too little prize money, but that does not change the fact that Mors-Thy is determined to pursue that goal.

– The experiences and experience it will give the club and not least our young players should not be underestimated, says the Mors-Thy director.
