The majestic music sounded, and a rich voice sang the Chinese patriotic song “Singing the Motherland”: “The five-star red flag flutters in the wind/How strong is the victory song.” On closer inspection, it was an Indonesian who sang confidently in Chinese.

This guy is Agung Surahman, the personal secretary of Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Prabowo. During Prabowo’s visit to China from March 31 to April 2 this year, Agong sang a song at a dinner hosted by senior officials of the two countries, which became a good diplomatic story between the two countries.

Agon then uploaded the video to social media. As seen in the video, Chinese Presidents Xi Jinping and Prabowo Prabowo, as well as Chinese and Indonesian dignitaries, applauded to the music. After Agong finished singing, the audience applauded warmly.

According to Indonesian newspaper Kompas, Agong learned that Prabowo had not informed him to prepare in advance. He was called into the banquet hall at short notice and asked to sing a song.

Agung said “Singing the Motherland” is one of Prabowo’s favorite songs. When he started playing for Prabowo many years ago, he noticed that Prabowo often listened to this song. A few years ago, Prabowo asked Agong to memorize the song.

“What Prabowo wants to convey is that Indonesia and China are friends. We love peace, we love our hometown and we also have the spirit of striving to become a developed country. I think that is That’s why Prabowo asked me to sing “Sing the Reason of the Homeland.

Agung also said Xi Jinping then shook his hand, gave him a thumbs up and praised his singing and pronunciation.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Ding Chong, an Indonesian resident researcher at the Indonesian Research Center of Central China Normal University, said that Prabowo’s arrangement of Agung singing seemed random, but actually reflected the superb diplomatic art of the Indonesian leaders.

“When foreign friends sing this song, the Chinese leaders present will definitely feel very close. Prabowo also wants to convey that the friendship between China and Indonesia can be as close as that of brothers.”

China and Indonesia have had frequent interactions recently. Shortly following the end of his visits to China, Japan and Malaysia, Prabowo, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Chinese Foreign Minister.Wang Yi will visit Indonesia on Thursday, April 18and be wary of various “small circles” forming in this area.

The situation in the South China Sea is becoming increasingly tense, with frequent conflicts between China and the Philippines over the Second Thomas Reef and the recent deepening of trilateral security cooperation between the United States, Japan and the Philippines. Relations between China and Indonesia might give China an opportunity to reduce cooperation between the United States and the Philippines. China also hopes that Indonesia will work within ASEAN to calm the situation in the South China Sea.

Liao Jianyu, a visiting senior fellow at the Yusof Issa Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, said in an interview that Prabowo knows that China needs Indonesia’s friendly cooperation, and that Indonesia also needs economic aid from China. As an Indonesian nationalist with a military background, Prabowo can also admire China’s achievements in nation-building.

“Prabowo asked his personal secretary to sing “Ode to the Motherland” at the dinner, which attracted the attention and appreciation of Xi Jinping and Chinese leaders, leaving a deep impression on the host. Even Xi Jinping applauded and congratulated it was indeed successful diplomacy.”

Ah Zong sang “Singing the Motherland” and told the media that it was Prabowo’s favorite song. Some people interpreted it as a sentiment towards China and the Chinese nation, or saw Prabowo as an Indonesian leader with a Chinese complex, Liao Jianyu said. that this interpretation is exaggerated.

“Before that, no one had heard that Prabowo liked Chinese songs, and he himself had never talked regarding it.”

However, this is not the first time Prabowo has interacted with Chinese songs in the spotlight. In 2018, a year before he ran in the last presidential election, he and his ex-wife Didi attended a Chinese community event at the reunion. Didi sang “The Moon Represents My Heart,” and Prabowo was also on stage. This situation is still brought up from time to time in the Indonesian Chinese community.
