The Dilemma of Zaventem Police’s Unused Tesla Model S Fleet

In 2018, keen to invest in a more environmentally friendly vehicle fleet, the local police zone of Zaventem proudly announced the acquisition of two Tesla Model S, fully electric cars, which were to serve as intervention vehicles. .

An investment that was clearly well felt since, a year later, the police zone began a new procedure to purchase two additional cars of the same type. Knowing that this model of car might be purchased for at least 86,000 euros at the time (note that the cars purchased in Zaventem were second-hand), it would be a shame if the police might not use them. And yet.

“We do not know”

According to information from our colleagues at Latest news, one of the two new Teslas purchased is languishing in the police station garage. The other has only been in circulation since this year. “We do not know if and when this vehicle can be used,” admitted Ingrid Holemans, mayor of the Brussels municipality, during the municipal council this Monday evening.

She specifies: “On January 15, 2020, we paid 240,000 euros to a Dutch company for these two Teslas but we quickly learned that the delivery of the cars had been postponed due to the coronavirus. » As the postponements increased, legal proceedings were initiated for non-payment. “The civil court ruled in our favor and the company had to pay us damages of almost 50,000 euros. »

Although the vehicles were finally delivered, certain documents were missing and made registration impossible. “In June 2022, we received the papers for one of the two cars with the promise that the registration form for the other vehicle would also be in our possession quickly,” adds the mayor. But this was never the case since part of the registration certificate is always missing (which consists of two parts, one to remain in the vehicle and the other at our house). “We haven’t received a single one. If we get this, the car can finally be put into service a week later. We don’t know why this continues to drag on. »

And the story might be worse because the car sold at the Zaventem police station might have sold the car twice. “We learned unofficially that the company was bankrupt. This can make things a little more difficult. » It therefore remains to be seen if and when the fourth Tesla Model S will be able to hit the roads of Zaventem.
