“Not eating rhythmically from a very young age is very important. And in those years there was no special scientific care around this part. All of us girls just didn’t eat, or ate very little. I was hungry, every day we were weighed, we had to be stable in our weight.
I remember Sundays because we had a day off on Saturday when I finished training I would go and eat, because on Sunday I wouldn’t eat once more, so on Monday when I would be weighed, it would be one the other. It is an issue at these ages in 12-14 year old girls. At home they told me to eat, but because you have already entered this hole and you know that you will face it later and you have coaches who are very persistent in this part, you don’t eat” said Doretta Papadimitriou.
“I was always a very muscular kid. I’m like that by nature, and this is an issue in rhythmics because I always looked the fattest and the one who told me I should lose weight, because I was very thin but I was muscular. That’s very difficult at these ages to accept and understand and do right.”
“They never came into contact with doping. Besides, I stopped athletics quite early. I would never do it, but I’ve never been in a position where someone told me I would. It’s something very bad and dangerous and it shouldn’t happen.”
At another point, Doretta Papadimitriou said, “I don’t have a scale. During my pregnancies I gained 30 kg, I don’t know how it happened, because I didn’t eat much, but my body needed 30 kg. Which I lost very quickly but I also got them very quickly because my kids are a year apart and then I also lost them relatively quickly. So there, maybe the spotlight of my life moved to something other than myself, in a magical way, all the stress around the weight went away, it happened on its own without me working on it.
So leaving the stress, stopping being so concerned with it because until then I was thinking a lot regarding it, what I’m going to eat or if I ate too much, I started not thinking regarding it. When I started not thinking regarding it so much, it kind of settled down. According to his logic, I eat a little of everything, without depriving myself, I’m also a lucky person because I don’t like sweets very much and I also have a good metabolism by nature, it somehow stabilized”.
“That’s why I don’t have a scale at home. If my eye catches the scale in a pharmacy, I might go up. I can tell the difference from my clothes. Some days I might eat a little more, other days a little less, take it easy on this part a lot. As far as my appearance is concerned, there are days when I wake up and say, “Doretta, you’re doing well” and others when I say, “Stay at home, don’t go anywhere, don’t let anyone see you.”
I believe that the part of appearance and how we perceive ourselves is purely a matter of psychology and how we perceive ourselves and not actual appearance. If you are good inside, you feel better outside too…” concluded Doretta Papadimitriou.
