Lhe 2024 fuel bonus, intended to support the most modest drivers in the face of rising energy prices, is becoming more precise. This compensation of 100 euros, extended for next year, will be conditional on fuel prices. According to the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, these would have to “explode”, and approach 2 euros per liter, for the aid to be granted to workers who request it in 2024.
This compensation, which only concerned the lowest 50% of households last year, would be extended, if activated next year, to 1.6 million additional beneficiaries, for a total cost of 600 million euros, according to the draft budget for 2024 currently being examined in Parliament.
According to figures provided by the government, the average price of a liter of unleaded 95 stood on Friday at 1.7985 euros, that of SP95-10 at 1.7685 euros, and that of diesel at 1.747 euros. Since January 2022, fuel prices have risen above the 2 euro mark, as was the case in March and June 2022 for diesel, and in June 2022 for SP95 gasoline and SP95-10 gasoline. But this did not happen once more this year, although prices exceeded 1.90 euros per liter in September.
“A reasonable threshold” at 1.95 euros per liter
“If tomorrow, which I don’t want of course, you have a worsening crisis in the Middle East, oil prices explode and as a result you have pump prices approaching 2 euros, I will trigger the workers’ fuel allowance system,” explained Bruno Le Maire this Thursday, December 14 on BFMTV/RMC. The minister specified that a price of 1.95 euros per liter of fuel seemed to him to be “a reasonable threshold” to activate the system.
“If in February, March or even later, you have fuel prices that reach that level […], immediately, we will put in place this protection system,” continued the number two in the government. And he added that: “Those who work will be able to continue to go to work without feeling upset because they are going to fill up their tanks which are too expensive. »
“The checks are over”
This system should be distinguished from a fuel “check” which would be “automatic”, underlined Bruno Le Maire: “That would mean that on 1is January, the Public Treasury sends a check to millions of French people. This will not be the case. »
While the government plans billions in savings to reduce France’s colossal debt and straighten out its public finances, the minister recalled that “checks are over”. However, he supported the maintenance of the energy check, distributed once a year since 2018 to help the poorest households with heating and lighting.
