In remarks at the “Shangri-La Dialogue” security summit, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that a war between China and Taiwan would be “devastating” and would affect the global economy in “ways we cannot imagine.”
In his statement, Austin said, “Conflict is neither imminent nor inevitable. It is our job to keep it that way.”
Austin continued by saying, “The whole world has an interest in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The whole world. The stability of commercial shipping lanes and global supply chains depend on it, as well as freedom of navigation around the world,” before Austin warns everyone, saying: “But don’t be. You have the slightest doubt, the conflict in the Taiwan Strait would be devastating.”
